NOTE: This story was taken from the blog of Foundations Health leader Bob Speelman. Each week Bob works at one of his facilities in different roles such as housekeeping, or as a nursing assistant, to bring A Culture of Care.

I spent the day at Darby Glenn our 110-bed facility in Hilliard, Ohio. Mark Ising is the Executive Director there and is doing an outstanding job. I spent the day in the Housekeeping Department which Luis Gonzales oversees. Luis began at Darby 2 ½ years ago in Laundry and Housekeeping and did such a great job that after a year he was promoted to the manager of the department.

Luis had me work with a young lady by the name of Stephanie Keaton, and I quickly saw why. Stephanie has a smile that lights up a room. She has a kindness and gentleness with the residents that was simply amazing to watch. Stephanie didn’t just clean the resident’s rooms, she visited with them and assisted them with whatever they needed. She took the time to make their lives better. Her love and affection for them is amazing.

As we worked together throughout the day, Stephanie began to share with me her story - her journey. With Stephanie’s permission, I want to share some of it with you.

Stephanie had her appendix removed at age 12 and while in the hospital she was given a strong pain killer. Stephanie told me that was the beginning of a dark and difficult battle with addiction. Stephanie began using and abusing pain killers for years until she hit rock bottom and began to reach out for help.

Stephanie told me she is still involved in Narcotics Anonymous and it has been a huge part of her recovery, but the organization she said she owes the most to is called Amethyst. Amethyst is an organization in Columbus, Ohio that helps women in substance abuse recovery. Stephanie said she checked herself into the program and for two years committed herself 24/7 to getting her life back. Stephanie said the women she met during that time are still to this day a big part of her support system. She said she owns so much to Amethyst and the people running the program. I have included a link below if you’d like to learn more about them.

During Stephanie journey toward recovery, she met a young man, and they decided to start a family. Stephanie gave birth to her son Cameron, and he’s the joy of her life. Not long after Cameron came into this world, his dad left it. Stephanie was devastated. Fortunately, Stephanie now had a support system, she was on the road to recovery, and she had Cameron that she loves more than life itself to fight for. Stephanie grandparents that lived in Florida sold their place and moved up to Ohio to live with Stephanie and Cameron and to help out in any way they can.

Stephanie – You are an amazing young lady. Thank you for sharing your story with me. The love you show our resident is amazing. Your work ethic is amazing. Your strength is amazing. You have an entire company of thousands of employees that I know supports you and stands along-side you. None of us were created to live depressed, defeated, guilty, condemned, ashamed, or unworthy. We all were created to be victorious. You, my friend, are a living example of that! You are someone that is full of love and gratitude for the life that you fought hard for.

If you run into Stephanie at Darby or if you see her online, please give her a hug and let her know you’re there for her and proud of her. If you are dealing with an addiction, I hope Stephanie’s story will inspire you to reach out and get help. I have a feeling that’s the reason she was willing to share it.

This is our Culture of Care.
